Warriors win HOOT

The Washington Warriors went undefeated, 6-0, to win the Heart of Oklahoma fast-pitch softball tournament this past weekend.

The Warriors defeated Lindsay 2-0 in the finals to claim victory.

Sophomore Ava Salcedo had a great outing in the circle for the Warriors in the title game.

“I’ve been thoroughly impressed with our pitching,” head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “Lindsay is a top-five caliber State tournament team. For Ava to go out and do what she did is a really good deal for us.”

She struck out eight batters through five innings of work and didn’t give up a hit in the game.

Senior Olivia Palumbo came on in relief work and struck out three batters herself.

Raelee Adkins drove in Julie Hoehner in the first inning to put the Warriors on the board.

They added their other run in the second inning when Daphne Palumbo crossed home plate.

The Warriors played solid defense and only gave up two runs during the entire tournament.

“We’re fortunate with our pitchers,” Lampkin said. “Olivia pitches a lot but we also have two freshman and a sophomore and we’re putting them in big games.”

Lampkin was talking about Salcedo, and freshmen Abby Byrd and Ally Dennis.

“The two freshmen are competitors and they are getting better each game,” Lampkin said. “If they can just go out and throw strikes we can play defense behind them.”

The tournament had a very competitive field this year and Lampkin took notice.

“It was a tough one this year,” he said “It was loaded.”

Even though the team isn’t hitting the ball quite as well, the coach sees something in this team he likes.

“Every arm we saw in the tournament was really good,” he said. “We struggled a little and were making adjustments. Hopefully we can get back to hitting consistently up and down the lineup.”

The team has had a torrid schedule up to this point in the season and Lampkin said that may be another reason for any struggles they may be having.

“The crazy thing is we really haven’t had time to practice,” he said. “We’ve just been playing a lot. We’ve had to learn as you go.”

Washington is 13-1 this season.

They next play Moore on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m.
