Warriors defeat ‘Dogs in double OT

Believed to be first ever overtime game at Reed Field

In what may have been the first ever overtime game at Reed Field, Washington prevailed 27-24 in double overtime over Sulphur last Friday night.

Washington won the statistical category by a wide margin, but a scoop and score helped the Bulldogs fight back from a 21-7 fourth quarter deficit to knot the score at 21-all sending the game into the first overtime period.

The Warriors lost the coin toss and Sulphur elected to play defense. Neither team scored in the first overtime period but Sulphur made their field goal attempt in the second OT.

Freshman quarterback Creed Barrett found Ohio State commit Nate Roberts open in the end zone on the Warriors first play of the second overtime period for the game winner.

Barrett ended the long night throwing for 439 yards and three touchdowns, completing 22 of 34 attempts.

Roberts hauled in seven Barrett aerials for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Mason Singletary finished with eight catches for 158 yards and a score while Kade Babcock had two receptions for 30 yards.

“We spread the wealth in the passing game,” head coach Brad Beller said. “We will continue to get better on the offensive side of the ball.”

But it was the defense that really impressed the Warriors’ coach.

“It was a great game,” Beller said emphatically. “It was one of the more physical games we’ve been a part of and I’m proud of our resiliency. We controlled the game statistically.”

Washington out-gained the Bulldogs 493-207.

“If we didn’t do anything well, we didn’t do well in the red zone,” Beller said. “But I have to give credit to our defense. They kept us in it. They kept Sulphur in their territory on the negative side of the field.

“Case Alexander had an amazing second half,” Beller continued. “He played well in the first half but he was amazing in the second half.”

Alexander finished with a game high 14 tackles with 11 of them solo stops and he also had a quarterback sack. Kash Guthmueller finished with 13 tackles including three for losses and Jordan Kilmer had 10 tackles.

“Those three guys made a lot of plays. Due to injury Kilmer had to move over from defensive end to linebacker. He did an amazing job staying mentally focused.

“Kale Brakefield was a hammer inside plugging every hole and forcing them to run wide,” the coach said.

Sulphur finished with just 83 yards rushing.

“It was an unbelievable defensive performance against a really good Sulphur team,” Beller said.

The Warriors will play host to the Purcell Dragons Friday night at 7 p.m. with Purcell coming off a dramatic last second victory over Lindsay last week.

“The first thing you notice about Purcell is how much more comfortable they are on the offensive side of the ball,” Beller said.

“They’ve got a very good identity on the offensive side of the ball,” he continued. “They execute extremely well and are battle tested,” Beller said referring to the rival Lindsay contest.

“It should be a good one,” Beller said. “They are always solid on defense. They do everything fundamentally sound. They fly around and are very physical. We have to be balanced between running and passing and cut out the penalties. Our defense needs to control the front line. They’re going to be bigger than we are so we need to control the line to control the running game.”

Warrior notes:

Washington Head Coach Brad Beller said he has contacted former Warrior coaches Dennis McCray and Don Schneberger and no one could remember of a home overtime game for Washington.

“We’re going to have to research it to see if that was in fact the first one,” Beller said.

Beller nominated Nate Roberts as the Offensive Player of the Week. Roberts finished the night with seven snags for 212 yards and two touchdowns including the game winner.

Getting the nod as the Offensive Lineman of the Week was Kingston Stringer, who finished with a 65 percent grade.

Beller nominated Case Alexander for the Defensive Player of the Week. He had 14 tackles, 11 of them solo, and a sack.

The Defensive Lineman of the Week nomination went to Hunter Sanders with six tackles, one for a loss and a sack.
