Purcell’s Dragons neatly tucked away district victories over Sulphur, 11-6, and Pauls Valley 16-0 but the Dragons were stung with losses to Perry, Southmoore and Choctaw.

In Monday’s victory over Sulphur KK Vazquez and Mac McKay led the offense getting two hits each. McKay had four RBIs in the game.

Hannah Whitaker smacked a two-run scoring triple.

Ella Resendiz and Ava Sparks combined to get the job done in the circle.

“We started off hot at the plate, hitting the ball hard and hitting with runners in scoring position,” head coach Sarah Jones said. “Ella and Ava both got time on the mound striking out a combine 10 and did a great job.

“We just got a little too comfortable starting the fourth and got a little sloppy in the fifth inning. The game should have been over a lot sooner than what it was but they finished the game how they started it in the seventh. It was a good district win and we are 2-0 in district play,” Jones said.

Purcell pounced on Pauls Valley scoring all 16 of their runs in the first three innings of the run-rule encounter.

Vazquez and McKay both had two hits to lead the squad. McKay was 2-3 with a trio of RBIs.

Kenna Esparza and McKay both tripled in the contest.

Whitaker and Resendiz combined to toss a one-hitter while striking out seven.

The Dragon bats were quiet against Perry in a 6-2 loss. Maroon pitching limited Purcell to five hits August 13.

In the Tuttle Festival the Dragons were 0-2 losing to both Choctaw, 6-1, and Southmoore, 2-1.

Going 3-3 on week one isn’t something we expected but it is something that we are looking forward to learning and growing from,” Jones said. “We know what we are capable of and we know what we need to work on. We were able to dust off the first week jitters, fighting adversity for the first time and figuring out that mental toughness is a key component to this game.

“Having a big group of seniors is special, helping them fight through the emotions that this is their final season is where we were last week. I think they were able to get that out of their system and were ready to hit a reset starting Monday at Sulphur,” the coach said.

“We did a lot of great things this last week both at the plate, on defense, and on the mound. Vazquez led us in hits this last week going 7 for 18 and McKay, Vazquez, and Resendiz led us in RBI’s with a total 13. Freshman Kendra Anderson came off the bench on Friday and went 3 for 6 at the plate batting .500, on base percentage of .571 and with an RBI. Resendiz, Whitaker, and Sparks all had appearances on the mound,” she concluded.

Purcell was to play at Ada Tuesday and co-host the second annual Heart of Oklahoma Tournament with Washington  starting Thursday.

Pool A in the tournament includes Purcell, Lindsay, Duncan, Alva, Latta and Tuttle. Those games will all be played in Purcell Thursday and Friday.

The Dragons play Duncan at 3:15 p.m. Thursday and Tuttle at 6:45 p.m. On Friday Purcell plays Latta at 5 p.m. and Lindsay at 6:45 p.m.

Pool B games will be played in Washington Thursday and Friday. In addition to Washington, also in that pool are Blanchard, Blackwell, Cache, Noble and Norman High.

Games on Saturday will be at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at both schools.
