District play winding down

After a torrid two-week span of games, the Washington fast-pitch softball team took a bit of a breather last week.

Their August 30 game against Stuart was cancelled and it allowed the Warriors to stop and smell the roses.

“We decided to reschedule the game and take a little break,” head softball coach Tylor Lampkin said. “The girls were working really hard and it was time to take a breather and relax.”

The team had played 13 games in 13 days.

Lampkin said during the down time, the team had some good practice, along with lifting and conditioning.

“We wanted to get some of the soreness taken care of,” he said.

In their District game against Bethel last Tuesday, Palumbo struck out eight batters on the way to an 11-0 Warrior win.

Shelbie Caveness was 3-4 with three RBIs at the plate. She also walked. She got the scoring going for the Warriors in the fourth inning.

Ava Salcedo was 2-3 with a triple and a walk.

Daphne Palumbo hit an in-the-park homer.

Washington’s District schedule is nearing completion, with only two games remaining, and unless something crazy happens the Warriors should be the champions.

“I think we’ve won the District,” Lampkin said. “It will put us in a really good spot and in the driver’s seat. This season has gone by fast and I’m proud of these girls.

“There have been a lot of moving parts and they’ve done a great job figuring out their roles and performing at a high level.”

Washington is 14-1 this season.
