Battling some key injuries, Purcell’s fast-pitch softball team was 6-6 heading into a district double header at Madill on Tuesday.

Head coach Sarah Jones reports she hopes to get Ella Resendiz and Jasey Baker back from injuries in the near future.

“It was a long and busy week for us,” Jones said. “We started the week and ended the week with wins but it did get a little shaky in between.”

The Dragons exploded on Dickson 16-1 on Monday, pounding out 15 hits while sophomore hurler Ava Sparks tossed a two-hitter.

Mack McKay and Maica Martinez led the offense both going 3-3. Martin had five RBIs in the big win.

“It was a great way to start off the week,” Jones said. “Everyone was able to get a hit or if you are Hadleigh Harp, you get hit twice. Ava Sparks had a great outing in the circle.”

“Our main goal right now is to work on the small stuff,” the coach said. “We continue to get more comfortable at the plate, jumping on the first good pitch, finishing at-bats and most importantly finishing ball games. We at times get too comfortable after the third inning. We have to continue to stay dialed in and focused. We are battling some quads, hamstrings and arms right now so getting and staying healthy is a top priority.”

In the Heart of Oklahoma Tournament the Dragons blanked Duncan 8-0 with KK Vazquez, McKay, Hadleigh Harp and Sparks all getting a pair of hits.

Purcell also pinned a 10-2 loss on Noble in the Heart.

Vazquez went 2-3 with a trio of RBIs to lead the offense.

The three Dragon losses in the tournament came against Tuttle, Latta and Lindsay.

“Hannah Whitaker took the circle against Tuttle and pitched an amazing nine innings only allowing three hits,” Jones said. “We lost in the ninth in ITB but after we hit the ball really hard and straight to them. We will take a tough nine innings game any day. I’m really proud of the way they played.”

Whitaker led the offense in a 7-6 loss to Latta going 3-3 with an RBI.

“We beat ourselves against Latta,” the coach confirmed. “Miaca and Kendra Anderson both did a great job in the circle but we didn’t do our jobs backing them up. When you out-hit an opponent, they only have two earned runs and they come up with the win, that loss is on us. We didn’t do our jobs on defense. The score should have been 5-2 and a win.”

Lindsay shutout the Dragons 4-0 last Friday when the Purcell bats went silent.

“Lindsay is a very tough 3A team and their pitcher, Flood, makes it tough at the plate which is exactly what we want to see now to prepare for September and October,” Jones said.

Purcell was to head to Madill Tuesday for a pair of district games and head to the Lindsay Festival Thursday to face El Reno and Latta.

Then the girls will get a much needed four-day break before we come back for district play against Byng on September 3 and then the Dale/Tecumseh tournament September 5-7.
