Funeral services for Wanda Hackney, 90, of Purcell were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home of Purcell.
Mrs. Hackney passed away Thursday, June 13, 2024 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Wanda Louise Simms was born August 9, 1933 in Purdy, Oklahoma, the second of four children born to Minor K. Simms and Vidia (Adkins) Miles. Her mother remarried young, and she was raised by Chester and Vidia. She started school in Lindsay and later attended Friend School. Wanda learned the value of hard work at a very early age. By age 10, she was washing dishes, and later worked as a waitress and eventually a cook.
On April 6, 1956, in Gainesville, Texas, Wanda married her best friend and life partner, Troy D. Hackney. Together they raised two children, daughter Debbie and son Dean. Wanda worked for Laverne’s Café and in the family business for a time, Miles Café in Lindsay. She worked for both the Norman Veteran’s Center and the Talihina Veteran’s Center in Food Service, as a greeter at Sam’s and made candy for Mason Pecan in Norman. She never stayed idle, and was always busy doing something.
She was a caregiver for many, and the rock of her family. Wanda was woman of great faith, and a longtime member of the Iron Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. A wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be dearly missed!
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Dean Hackney; her husband, Troy D. Hackney; parents, Minor Simms and Chester and Vidia Miles and her sisters, Sharon Gray, Pauline Dexter and Betty Harris.
Wanda is survived by her daughter Debbie Nelson of Norman; Son Troy Dean Hackney of Purcell; brother and sisters-in-law, Bobby Gray, Joyce Moore, Travis Hackney and Joe Hackney; nieces and nephews, Tena Tucker, Kourtney Bearden, Heath Gray, Floyd Hackney, Gerald Hackney, Marcie Davenport and Lawatha Hackney; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
