Pursuit ends in crash, arrest

Fleeing suspect reaches speeds over 100 through Purcell

Purcell Police Officer Jacob Martz attempted to stop a speeding vehicle just before 11 p.m. Sunday night before the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed northbound on Green Avenue.

Martz was southbound on Green in the 1700 block of south Green in front of Rubys when he clocked a Chevrolet Avalanche traveling north at 68 m.p.h.

Martz turned around and flipped on his emergency lights.

The Avalanche proceeded to run a red light at Wyatt Rd. while going about 80 m.p.h.

Speeds of over 100 m.p.h. were reached as the Avalanche crossed Main St. and then Washington St.

Martz reported the vehicle struck the center median at Jackson St. and Green Ave. causing the vehicle to swerve right and left a few times.

As the vehicle continued northbound a blue Honda CR-V was northbound in the inside lane.

“When the CR-V saw my lights it attempted to move into the outside lane,” Martz reported.

That’s when the Avalanche, driven by Ricardo Campaner, 18, of Oklahoma City, struck the CR-V causing it to roll multiple times, coming to rest on the west side of the old Purcell Municipal Hospital.

Campaner’s vehicle struck several roadway signs before  coming to rest in the grass in front of Cash Saver.

Martz said the suspect then tried to flee on foot but was apprehended in the Cash Saver parking lot.

The driver of the CR-V, Iraida A. Morales, was transported to OU Medical in Oklahoma City for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.

Martz arrested Campaner, who smelled of alcohol. He was transported to PMH for blood tests and later taken to the McClain County Jail where he faces numerous charges including aggravated DUI, felony eluding, fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in injury and reckless driving.

Lt. Heather Kaluzny was also on scene along with Wadley’s EMS and the Purcell Fire Department.
