Veterans Day began in 1919 when President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day, intended as a day to honor those who served in World War I.
After World War II had required the greatest number of troops in American history and with the urging of veterans service organizations the 83rd Congressional Congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
It became a day to honor service members of all wars.
To honor those who have served for our country past and present Purcell High School will have its annual Veterans Day assembly November 11 at 11 a.m.
Following the assembly will be a luncheon honoring service members hosted by Purcell’s National Honor Society.
