Elementary gym remodel planned if bond passes

Student safety and Ag program will also get funding

The Purcell Elementary School gym has not had a meaningful makeover in the last 30 years.

The closest thing to a remodel was new flooring, installed in 2016 to the tune of $24,000.

Funding for this update was thanks to the PTO, Youth Basketball League and the Purcell Public Schools Foundation.

Money was also raised for the floor by students in a multi-building contest where the building principal whose students raised the least money had to kiss a pig.

Past that, the facility looks much the same as it has for generations.

It only recently, in the last few years, had air conditioning installed.

If voters pass the proposed $19.465 million school bond issue, school officials say the gym will be renovated. Nearly $1.8 million of the bond has been slated to go to the gymnasium.

Other plans in the bond include:

  • A new Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) storm shelter and classrooms at the Elementary School
  • A new FEMA storm shelter and classrooms at the Intermediate School
  • A new competition gym at the Junior High, which will also serve as a FEMA  rated shelter. The shelter will be open to the public after school hours
  • A new 82-space parking lot for Junior High and High School use, which will provide a bus loop
  • Construction of a new Ag barn, which will include animal stalls and a wash bay, in closer proximity to the schools

The vote on the proposal will be August 27.

To pass, the proposition  must carry at least 60 percent of the vote.

Purcell schools has a webpage with information on the proposal. It can be found at www.purcellps.org/page/bond.
