Williams returns opening kick for a score and the rout was on

Posted

Senior Gavrie Williams returned the opening kick off 90 yards for a touchdown and the Bulldogs never looked back in a 47-14 rout of the Little Axe Indians last Thursday night.

Williams ended up in the end zone twice on the night turning a slant pass route into a 76-yard touchdown off the arm of quarterback Cadyn Krueger.

Krueger threw for 123 yards and a pair of scores and ran for another six-point play, finishing with 101 yards rushing.

“We played well,” head coach Keith Bolles said. “It was just a good team effort. Our special teams played well.

“It’s not often you return a kick off for a touchdown. You don’t get many of those,” he said.

In addition to that, kicker Kaden McRavin made all six of his point after attempts.”

The Bulldogs never had to punt in the contest.

“It’s always nice when you make all of your PATs,” the coach confirmed.

“Gavrie’s return got us started,” Bolles said. “Both of our running backs Cameron Weatherford and Dalton Brewer played well. Krueger just had an outstanding game as did our offensive line.”

Bolles was talking about the play of Wyatt McBride, Issac Martin, Cale Garver, Aiden Batterton and Cash Lippel.

Weatherford carried the mail 11 times for 73 yards and a scored.

Dalton Brewer scored three touchdowns on five carries and Klauen Shird had a rushing touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, McBride, Garver, Martin and Boston Day all turned in top-shelf performances in the defensive line.

“They played really well and our two linebackers Weatherford and Buddy Cormany had exceptional games. Little Axe’s quarterback likes to run the ball and we were able to keep him under control most of the night,” the coach said.

Up next for the 3-1 Bulldogs is a home contest Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Marlow Outlaws come to town for the second district game of the season.

Marlow runs a one-back spread offense and operates out of a 50 set on defense.

They opened the season with a tough 17-7 loss at the hands of North Rock Creek and came back to flog Chickasha, 35-7.

The Outlaws are currently ranked No. 6 in Class 2A.

Bolles said ball security, limiting mistakes and continuing good special team play will be a key for the Bulldogs.

Bulldog notes:

Head coach Keith Bolles nominated Issac Martin as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. Martin graded out at 79 percent against Little Axe.

Nominated as the Offensive Player of the Week was Cadyn Krueger who was 5-7 passing for 127 yards and  a touchdown. He also rushed for 63 yards and another touchdown.

Getting the nomination as the Defensive Player of the Week was Cameron Weatherford. He registered 12 tackles and had one quarterback sack.

Nominated as the Defensive Lineman of the Week was Wyatt McBride, who had seven tackles and one sack.
