Art Walk debut is total success

Hundreds of people visited Main Street on Friday to partake in all the inaugural Art Walk had to offer.

Over 40 vendors showcasing their wares lined the street as live music reverberated through the brick and mortar that make up the shops of Historic Downtown Purcell, which stayed open late for the event.

It was, by all accounts, a success.

“I think it goes to show that the community really wants something like this in our area,” said Dani Howsley, owner of Pride Popcorn.

Howsley and Dustin Green, owner of That Shop, co-organized the Art Walk and sponsored it with the help of the Heart of Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce and 13 other shops along Main Street.

The Art Walk marked a long-awaited return of activity to the area after construction of Main Street  ended in late 2023.

“I think it went great,” Howsley said. “There’s a bunch of people that showed up. . . . Every vendor I spoke to said they want to come back next month.”

Jay Skinner and Brett Burkhart, the Americana banjo and guitar duo that make up the Cleveland County Slacker Cooperative, provided live music for the event. In a Facebook post on Sunday, the duo announced they are returning for the next Art Walk on July 19.

Art Walk lasts from 6 to 9 p.m. on the third Friday of every month and is set to reoccur through October, take the winter off then return in March 2025.
